CRA Mid-Summer Championship Sunday at
Plymouth Speedway
|
| Salem, IN (July 20, 2011) The CRA
Super Series and EDCO Welding CRA Street Stocks will be back in action
this Sunday at Plymouth Speedway in the Mid-Summer Championships.
The event has become a traditional midsummer stop for CRA. The Vores
Welding & Steel CRA FWD Compacts will also be part of a special
non-points event as part of the racing action at Plymouth Sunday.
Plymouth Speedway has had a resurgence this season under new owner
Ed Kennedy and new promoter Eric Saunders with some very creative
promotions and events. Sundays event will be a Champion Racing
Association promoted event. |
| The CRA Super Series comes into Sundays
event at the halfway point of the 2011 season. Current points
leader Scott Hantz looks to add a fourth CRA Championship to his record
three, but this one is a little special. |
|
We have dedicated this season to winning the CRA Super Series
Championship in Dick Poes memory, stated Hantz. We
lost Dick about midway through last season and I had missed some
CRA races, so we didnt get the Championship in 2010, Johnny
VanDoorn has won the last two, so I made it a personal goal to win
the Championship this season in Dicks memory.
|
|
Hantz comes into Sundays event with a 37 point lead over
second place Terry Fisher Jr. Hantz is still seeking his first series
victory of the season, but has been the most consistent driver through
the first six series events including two second place finishes
and five top ten finishes. Hantz is the series victory leader at
Plymouth with three wins in the series eight events held there and
looks to add to his record series win total Sunday.
|
|
Terry Fisher Jr. has been on fire lately with the CRA Super Series.
He got his first ever series victory at Angola Motor Speedway on
July 3rd and has two third place finishes including the series last
event at M-40 Speedway were he challenged for the win throughout
the race. Fisher is in the best points position he has ever
been in before with the series heading into Sundays event
at Plymouth Speedway.
|
|
Rookie Derrick Griffin is currently third in points, 24 points
behind Fisher Jr. and is leading the Rookie of the Year Standings.
The South Bend native is looking forward to returning to his home
track this weekend with his potent Welch & Wilson Motorsports
team. Griffins team car, the #14 Welch & Wilson Motorsports
machine, is currently fourth in owner points heading into Sundays
event. Rookie competitor Mason Mingus is in fifth place, only one
point behind the #14 car and is second in Rookie of the Year points.
Mingus looks forward to heading to Plymouth after good runs at the
last two series short track events.
|
|
CRA veteran Kenny Tweedy has had a good 2011 season to date with
four top ten finishes and was the EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier at
the series last event at M-40 Speedway. Tweedy is in sixth place
heading to Plymouth, only three points behind Mingus. Nick Gullatta
is in seventh place after a second place finish at M-40, the best
of his two year CRA career, plus he was the EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier
Award winner at the Angola event. Jay Niewiek is currently eighth
in series points. Veteran Jeff lane is in ninth while Damon Ecoff
is in tenth place. All the top ten will be racing in Sundays
event.
|
|
Three former CRA Super Series Plymouth Speedway winners are also
entered including last years event winner Eddie Hoffman, who
collected his second JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour victory last Saturday
at Illiana Motor Speedway. Fellow Plymouth winners Boris Jurkovic
and two time CRA Super Series Champion Brian Ross, a Plymouth native,
is also entered.
|
|
Ross Kenseth, son of NASCAR Champion Matt Kenseth, is also entered
for Sundays event. Kenseth comes into Sundays event
as one of the hottest late model drivers in the country with wins
in the ASA Midwest Tour and a win in the CRA Super Series event
at Columbus Motor Speedway. Other drivers who are entered includes
Brian Campbell, a two time winner in 2011 with the CRA Super Series,
Floridas Steve Dorer, who got his first series victory at
M-40 Speedway and finished second in the Angola event, also Tyler
Roahrig, Joe Beaver, Jason Dietsch, Matt Hall, Justin Alsip, Colin
Toland, John Long, Brent Jack, Colin Nickolai, Jordan Sims, Jack
Smith, Jeep Pflum, and Joe OConnor. In all there are 29 cars
pre-entered for Sundays 125 lap CRA Super Series event.
|
|
The EDCO Welding CRA Street Stocks are also at their mid-point
of the 2011 season after seven of 14 events. CRA veteran racer Jeff
Lane comes into Sundays event as the series points leader,
despite some bad luck in the series Ivy Tech 200 last Saturday night
at Anderson Speedway, because second place in points Josh Poores
luck was even worse. Poore was the first car out of the event on
lap three after a broken ball joint caused him to make hard contact
with the outside retaining wall. Lane was leading the event at the
hallway break at lap 100, but then lost 16 laps repairing a broken
brake line at the start of the second half of the event. Lane did
manage to get a 14th place finish.
|
|
Lane leads Poore by 49 points going into this Sundays event.
Rookie Mark Mason is in third place, he is 69 points behind Poore.
Rich Segvich is in fourth place, he is only five points behind Mason.
Jason Drummond is currently in fifth place, he is 18 points behind
Segvich.
|
|
There have been five different winners in the five EDCO Welding
CRA Street Stock events held at Plymouth Speedway. Chad Poorman
was the most recent winner in Aprils Cabin Fever event. Other
series winners at Plymouth include Josh Nelms, David Long, Robbie
Henderson and Kevin Gunkel. All the wins have been those drivers
first ever series win. Saturdays event will pay $1000 to win
and $100 to start.
|
|
The Vores Welding & Steel CRA FWD Compacts will be included
in a special 25 lap non-points event Sunday. The event will have
cars from four different divisions competing in one race including
CRA FWD Compact rules, open FWD Compacts with any D.O.T. Tire, open
Mini Stocks with any D.O.T. Tire and Mini Stocks with Hoosier Spec
Tires. There will be a first place trophy awarded to each division
winner, plus bonuses for the top three finishers in each division.
|
|
There will be an open practice on Saturday, pits open at 3:00pm,
practice will run from 4:00 to 8:00pm. Track owner Ed Kennedy and
track promoter Eric Saunders will host a racer appreciation hog
roast/party with a live band following the open practice. Everyone
with a pit pass from that day will eat at the hog roast free with
the general public being able to buy hog roast tickets as well.
The party and band are free and open to the public. On site camping
will be free as well Saturday night.
|
| On Sunday, pits open at 12:00pm (noon),
practice will begin at 2:30pm with qualifying starting at 4:15pm.
There will be an on track autograph session following qualifying with
all the drivers competing in Sunday nights events. The race
program will begin at 6:00pm with the 50 lap EDCO Welding CRA Street
Stocks feature. The 25 lap FWD/Mini Stock four division special will

| Kenyon
Midgets Ready to Roll Into Plymouth Speedway - By Kevin Fox |
|
The Kenyon name is synonymous with auto racing and on July 22nd
you will be able to witness the series the famous family has built
from the ground up, Kenyon Midgets. The Kenyon Midgets feature your
traditional midget car chassis template but, Don Kenyon, Series
owner and Champion chief mechanic, made a few tweaks to the blueprints
prior to the six month design, build and reveal process. The plan
was to bolt in a highly-spec 120hp Yamaha motorcycle engine, a clutch,
and a starter making the cars completely self sufficient and very
affordable for drivers ranging in age from 12 to their mid 40s
|
| I used to lease Plymouth Speedway,
but have since stepped away from leasing and involved myself in other
motorsports ventures, says Don. We go way back, sometimes
too far back, jokingly as he reflected on his relationship with
Irish Saunders and his young promoter son, Eric. |
| Mr. Kenyon, expecting around twelve midgets,
is excited to see his series take aim at the 3/8th mile asphalt oval
and if everything goes well hopes to make a return trip before seasons
end. So, mark July 22nd on your calendar as Mechanix Wear presents
the Kenyon Midgets on Hoosier Old Wheels Night featuring Dragon Race
Fuel Outlaw Late Models, Teachers Credit Union Late Models, Street
Stocks and Front Wheel Drives capped off by a Burnout Contest. The
ten dollar grandstand gate opens at 5pm, Oliver Ford Lincoln Opening
Ceremonies will take place at 8:00pm and as always www.plymouthspeedway.net
is open 24 hours a day - seven days a week! |

500 Driver Davey Hamilton Special Guest at Plymouth Speedway |
|
Hamilton has made 50 series starts and while never winning a race,
finished second 3 times driving in the Indy Racing League (now known
as the IZOD IndyCar Series). He placed second in series points in
the 19961997 season and again in 1998.
|
| Irish and Eric Saunders are longtime
friends and I am excited about supporting my friends says Davey. |
| Davey cut his teeth on short tracks and
he encourages local drivers to have fun, you cant take
racing too seriously. Stick together is what Davey encourages
local drivers to do, it is like having a small family. It is very
important to keep short tracks healthy because you never know when
some local drivers could become future stars in the major leagues
of racing. |
| Davey got his start competing in the entry
level division of limited sprint cars in his home state of Idaho.
Open wheel was his first love even though he did have an opportunity
to go NASCAR racing, but he didnt want to be a struggling NASCAR
racer. Within two weeks of getting the opportunity to race in NASCAR
he received numerous offers to stay in open wheel. The call of a lifetime
came in 1995 from the legendary A. J. Foyt and he began racing for
Foyt in 1996. They continue to be best friends to this day. |
| Davey Hamilton, former Indy Racing League
driver and soon to be the newest IZOD IndyCar Series television commentator,
was scheduled to make a special guest appearance at Plymouth Speedway,
Plymouth, Indiana on Friday, July 22nd but had to reschedule for Friday,
July 29th because of his television commitment for the remainder of
the IZOD IndyCar season. And to make this night even more special
it is $20.00 carload night!! |
| In 2001 at the Texas Motor Speedway, Jeret
Schroeder lost an engine exiting turn 2. This caused him to lose control
of his car and make contact with Davey Hamilton's machine. Hamilton's
car slammed into the wall, nearly getting caught in the catch fence,
and beginning to spin a number of times before coming to rest against
the inside retaining wall. Hamilton suffered such severe injuries
to his legs and feet, that doctors at one time believed that amputation
would be the best option for him. |
| After the crash, Hamilton retired from
the cockpit, and has undergone 21 operations to reconstruct his feet
and legs. He began standing after five months of the crash, and spent
a year in the wheelchair. |
| Come and meet Davey Hamilton, get an autograph
or your picture taken with this very personable IZOD IndyCar racer
turned television commentator. |

Pastrana making Special Guest Appearance |
|
Eric Saunders, promoter of Plymouth Motor Speedway, just announced
that Travis Pastrana will make a special guest appearance on Friday,
August 12th.
|
| Travis Pastranas accomplishments
are already legendary: world freestyle champion at age 14, five-time
U.S. amateur motocross champion, two-time Canadian amateur motocross
champion, youngest rider ever to represent the United States at the
Motocross des Nations in France, 125cc pro national outdoor champion,
125cc East Supercross Series champion, and most successful competitor
in the history of X Games freestyle motocross. He won back-to-back
championships in the Rally America Series so he is just as
amazing on four wheels. And if all of his accomplishments arent
enough, he has taken on the world of NASCAR racing. Pastrana is personal
friends with Eric and Irish Saunders. According to a recent interview
on Sirius NASCAR channel 128, Travis said he got his first taste of
being on four wheels when Irish Saunders let him take a spin in a
Silver Crown car at Lakeland Speedway. |
| Travis wants to help his friend Eric Saunders
the promoter of the 3/8th mile Marshall County asphalt oval after
Eric was critically injured and paralyzed on August 29, 2010 (the
day before Eric turned 18) while practicing at his Lakeville home
track for an upcoming Motocross race in the Steel City Pro National
in Pittsburgh, PA. |
| On this special evening Plymouth Motor
Speedway will host a complete race program of Outlaw Late Models,
Sportsman, Street Stocks, and Front Wheel Drives along with a burnout
contest. Line up at the gate early, find a seat immediately because
an anticipated standing room only crowd will be there to see and talk
to the most amazing man on two wheels, Travis Pastrana. |
